Zoology

Brief History:

The Department of Zoology (Biology-II) was opened in the year 1985 with 128 seats in +2 Science as per the order of the Govt. of Orissa The number of seats in Biology in +2Sc is increased to 256 in 1986-87. In 1989 -90 B.Sc. (CBZ) was opened with 48 seats as per the decision of the Govt. of Orissa. The Department started imparting Honours teaching from 2001-02 with 16 students on roll. The first batch of Honours students passed out of the College in 2005. In 1985 Mrs. Bidyutprava Behera joined the Department and acted as the Head of the Department. Mr. A.C. Mohapatra joined as a faculty member followed by Mr. R.C. Mohapatra. Later Mrs Behera was replaced by Mr. N.N. Pati who joined the Department on transfer and is working as the Head. Mr. A.C Mohapatra was transfered to S.V.M. College and Mr. Aparajeya Panda joined the Department in the session 2016-17.Since its inception the Department of Zoology has been organizing various Programmes and activities for the all round development of the students.

Aim and Objective:

The following specific aims of teaching Zoology are stated below:

  • To acquire Knowledge about the animals which are beneficial and also harmful to human.
  • To equip students to pursue various Vocational courses in later life and to make him/her self dependant.
  • To make students well aware about various health problem and to take preventive measures.
  • To make students conscious about environmental problem and try their best to develop a good environment.
  • Harmonious Development of a good and ethical character
  • To make students confident for jobs in Govt. & Non-Govt. Sector.

training and orientation:

Sri Ramesh Chanra Mohapatra, Lecturer attended the N.S.S. training and orientation of Utkal University i OUAT, BBSR from 06.11.202 to 15.11.2002.

Equipment of the Department:

Many microscopes, Microtome, Incubator, oven, Autoclave, Digital balance, over head Projector, Colorimeter, Sphygmomanometer, centrifuge, Chymograph.

The department organizes the following cultural activities.

  • Study tours to different places of Zoological importance
  • Farewell to the outgoing students

Prospect:

  1. Many students pursue higher studies and complete their Post-Graduation in zoology, Environment science and also few of them got Doctoral Degree.
  2. Some other students have completed B. Ed & CT training courses and employed in various government and non-government schools.
  3. A lot of students of our department are presently serving in various govt. and private sectors, such as banking, Railways, postal, health care, police, defence, management, mass media and financial sectors.

Future Plan

  1. To conduct more departmental seminars, interdepartmental talks, group discussions, etc.
  2. To maintain good synergy between teachers & students
  3. To make students aware about the prospect of opting zoology as Honours Courses.
  4. Most of the students of this college come from a heterogeneous socio-economic background, so, they should properly be guided to go for B. Ed & other training to get them-selves an early employment.
  5. A guidance and counselling cell is to be formed for the all round development of personality of the individual students.
